Sailors in this group focus on developing and refining the critical boat-handling, boat-speed, physical and mental stamina, and boat-tuning skills needed to excel in national and international competition. Long practices in a wide range of wind and sea conditions combined with intense workouts will demand high levels of maturity, focus, and dedication. Gold Fleet sailors will also be developing team racing skills.
During classroom lectures, Gold Fleet sailors will acquire theoretical knowledge about racing strategies and tactics, rules interpretation, and sailing physics. Video sessions will be used to analyze sailors' individual techniques and tactical solutions in various situations. Weather permitting, all of our weekend practices will be in the ocean off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. Our weekday practices will be in front of LYC in the intracoastal. Sailors should come prepared to work out on any given day with running shoes and swim goggles.
The sailors are expected to compete at USODA events and attempt to qualify for the US National Team in order to represent the USA and LYC at international events.

Video sessions will be used to analyze sailors' individual techniques and tactical solutions in various situations Weather permitting, all of our weekend practices will be in the ocean off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. Opti Bronze Fleet is for sailors who have learned the core values of sailboat racing, including the ability to race around the course, teamwork and the corinthian spirit. These sailors train with a coach more focused on racing. They begin the season in Green Fleet races and move out of Green Fleet racing during the season after placing high in Green Fleet racing. Bronze Fleet sailors are expected to own their own boat. The mission of Bronze Fleet is to accelerate the learning process of sailors' tactics and preparation so they enter Silver Fleet ready to perform at their best through workouts, lectures and condition dependent ocean sailing. Bronze Fleet sailors are more self-reliant than Green Fleet and they completely rig and derig their boats by themselves. Bronze Fleet has the same practice times as Gold and Silver so Bronze Fleet sailors have the opportunity to watch how the more seasoned sailors take on their training.
Learn to Race: Ages 6-12
Opti Green Fleet is designed for sailors who have graduated Mercury Mentors and/or have established they can sail an Opti sailboat by themselves. This program is an introduction to racing, and Green Fleet sailors have relaxed regattas scheduled into the program to get them used to the racing process. Each sailor will be chartered a boat to use for the whole season if they don't own an Opti. The young sailors will practice basic sailing skills by using fun activities such as games, relays, and challenges to teach them how to race a sailboat. The Green Fleet mission is to teach sailors how to sail around a course safely, learn teamwork by helping each other rig and derig their boats, and sailing's corinthian spirit. While having fun, kids build self-esteem and increased physical and mental alertness. Sailors will be introduced to competitive sailing and will gain the core skills necessary to eventually graduate to the next level Opti fleet.
This introductory class is designed for sailors ages 5-7.Here, kids will learn basic concepts of seamanship and the sport of sailing.
This course is an intro level class designed to teach kids the fun of sailing while they gain confidence and shipshape habits. Mercury Mentors instructors use simple games and challenges to teach safety and how to control a sailboat while having fun and exploring the LYC sailing basin. They will learn much needed future skills such as rigging and de-rigging a boat, tying knots, and proper sailing terminology. The primary objective is to introduce sailing as a fun safe activity and prepare these young sailors to progress into LYC's very successful Opti program. LYC sailors attend regattas once they graduate to the Opti sailboat.
